Lapu-Lapu City was named after Datu Lapu-Lapu, a FIRST Filipino hero who stood and fought for their land and freedom during the Battle of Mactan from the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan who wanted to give honor to his King in Spain in invading Cebu.
Magellan’s troops were fully equipped with armor, swords, crossbows, lances and muskets while Lapu-Lapu’s warrior were only armed with iron swords, bows and bamboo spears. How amazing! Compared to the opponents who have more advanced war tools, Lapu-lapu and his people fought with bravery to protect their land, their people; your land and my current land with just the simple and native tools to defeat Magellan. This is the place I grew up and a place where I am recently living and as a resident here and as a Filipino citizen, I am always been proud that the First Filipino hero do first exist here in this City and protected this land also for the coming generation to preserve FREEDOM!

His story ran from generation to generation recognizing his bravery and vigor in protecting his land and his people. The story printed from school year text book of pupils and students detailing the story of the victorious fight in Battle of Mactan in 1521.

1. Lapu-Lapu appeared on a Philippine centavo coin circulated in the Philippines from 1967-1974
2. There were films about him entitle “LAPU-LAPU” as well.
3. Lapu-Lapu is the central figure in the seal of the PHILIPPINE NATIONAL POLICE that symbolized his genuine attributes of leadership, courage, nationalism, self-reliance and bravery.
Lapu-Lapu arrived from Borneo during Rajah Humabon’s reign over Sugbo (now Cebu). He asked favor from the King to give him a place of land to settle together with his people.
Humabon provided him the Mandawili (now Mandaue) and the Island of Opong (now Opon). Lapu-Lapu and His people work hard and contributed to the trade of Sugbo. They work hard and live peacefully as they race their family. Until such time Magellan came in who underestimated and made a wrong assumption. As Rajah Humabon submitted to him, he also thought that Lapu-lapu would do the same. However, compared to Spanish structure that if the king surrender, the other part of it would do likewise but it is NOT! Lapu-Lapu strongly disagreed and stood up his ground to fight against them even it will cause his own life; that fight then cause Magellan’s death and the rest of his people.

It was said that at the age of 18, he mastered excellently some sports like swimming, wrestling and boxing. At the age of 20, he already fought with Bornean soldiers and pirates and won against them.
🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭He did leave us the legacy of freedom who fought with extra-ordinary dedication, bravery and LOVE for his land and of course for his people.
